Equally and validly well known by terms such as “Burst Evolution”, “Evolution Plus”, "Draconic Evolution" and “Fabulous Evolution”, Mega Evolution is a temporary transformation between a trainer and a specific bonded Pokemon that allows the Pokemon to access greater heights of power and use abilities previously unavailable to them. Although appearing simple in the hands of skilled trainers used to the technique, there’s plenty under the surface that one should be aware of before diving in.

Basics of Mega Evolution
Pokemon require both a mega stone and a keystone to evolve. The keystone activates the mega stone, the mega stone triggers the evolution. In the presence of a keystone and a mega stone, wild Pokemon can mega evolve. However, the keystone requires a sacrifice of energy to work. If a wild Pokemon attempts to mega evolve, the stone will take energy from anything organic. Animals are prioritized over plants. In the event of a trainer attempting to mega evolve their Pokemon, the keystone will always sap energy from the trainer rather than anyone else. This is part of the "bond" between a Pokemon and their trainer, because the trainer is voluntarily relinquishing a bit of their energy in order to make their pal stronger.
The process will tire both parties out. The keystone must take some energy from the trainer, and the act of mega evolution burns the Pokemon out because of energy expended by the Pokemon. To note, the energy consumption is heavily skewed to draw mostly from the Pokemon, with only the initial trigger fueled by the trainer. After the first usage of Mega Evolution, the trainer will almost always faint. This varies based on a numerous number of factors - such as age and the circumstance of the triggering. Younger users will often have a hard time maintaining the form for very long, and are more prone to fainting when attempting to adjust. When a user is in battle, they will faint as soon as the adrenaline leaves them.
Like any difficult technique, the key to mastering it is practice. The stronger the trainer / Pokemon pair is, the longer they can hold the transformation before succumbing to exhaustion. Mega Evolving outside of battle is an excellent way to practice, as it’s far harder to use or maintain Mega Evolution without the adrenaline of an active battle. Mega Evolution cannot be maintained if the trainer is unconscious.

Bonding
The process of Mega Evolving permanently bonds the trainer and Pokemon to their respective stones. Although the keystone can be attuned to a new owner after a short time away from the old owner, the mega stone can only ever be used by the original user. Similarly, the keystone will bond to the mega stone and refuse to work with any others. To break this bond, the mega stone must be completely destroyed. Although the stones are sturdy enough to make it through combat with few problems, dedicated effort will eventually destroy the stone and break the bond.

History
The first mega stone was found following a notably large meteor shower on Autumn 26th, 1059. Within a particularly large meteor discovered by a group of civilians, a crack in the rocky surface showed an unusually-colored smooth stone sealed within similarly to geodes. Over the next few months, the appearance of a strange creature traveling the region led to the discovery of the first two keystones, and consequently the first ever mega evolution. Since then, more and more different mega stones for different Pokemon have been found, along with keystones to link up with.
In 1071, a way of un-syncing the keystone from a mega stone was found. A researcher in Avalon sealed their mega stone (an Alakazamite) in a container of hydrofluoric acid overnight. When they returned, they found that the stone had completely dissolved. Upon testing with other mega stones, they were able to successfully Mega Evolve their Beedrill. The keystone synced up to the Beedrillite without issue. This discovery was met with mixed feelings, as mega stones were still quite rare and needing to destroy one to bind a new stone was an exceedingly expensive price.
On Spring 27th, 1072, it was discovered that Legendary Pokemon could also Mega Evolve. The terrorist group Team Neo Noir, using artificially created mega stones, were able to force the Eon Pokemon: Latios and Latias, into a state of Mega Evolution. Sightings over the next three years confirmed that the two were able to act as the keystone to trigger each other’s Mega Evolution.
Winter 14th, 1089 marked the first public appearance of a groundbreaking discovery: Mega Evolution of an artificial Pokemon. The artificial Legendary Pokemon Mewtwo, created by scientists working for the terrorist group Team Neo Noir, was able to take on a mega form using an artificial mega stone. Much like the stones used by Latios and Latias, the mega stone did not require a keystone.
